Rayong sits on the Gulf of Thailand coast east of Bangkok, a working provincial capital that doubles as the mainland gateway to Ko Samet. Fishing boats and the Rayong River share the waterfront with a night market and a bus terminal that sends day-trippers on to Ban Phe pier, where longtail boats cross to the island in under an hour. Inland, the province is Thailand's durian belt: roadside orchards sell rambutan, mangosteen and durian by the crate every May and June, and the annual fruit fair fills the town center with the smell of it. Rayong is also an industrial city, home to the Map Ta Phut petrochemical estate, which means hotel stock leans toward business-ready rooms with reliable air-conditioning and fast Wi-Fi alongside the family resorts near Mae Ramphueng and Suchada beaches. Stay here for a quieter, cheaper base than Pattaya, with the same coastline and a faster run to Ko Samet's white sand.
