Our take

Northerly has just 44 rooms set around an outdoor saltwater pool, and some balconies open straight onto the water. It sits at 78 Moo 14 Sankhongluang Road in Rob Wiang, 1.6 km from the Clock Tower (about 20 minutes on foot) and about 25 minutes by car from Mae Fah Luang airport. Guests describe it as new, tidy and run by friendly staff. Among the few criticisms, one guest flagged weak soundproofing and another found the breakfast underwhelming. I would book it for a family with a car who wants a calm base and a pool after temple days. I would skip it if you want to walk out of the door into night-market streets.

  • Ask for a room with a pool-view balcony: it gives you a private outdoor spot looking over the water.
  • Use the free parking and EV charging to drive day trips north to the Golden Triangle or south to Wat Rong Khun, then come back to a quiet street.
  • Avoid March if anyone in the family has asthma: northern Thailand's crop-burning haze runs from February to April and peaks that month.
  • The Night Bazaar and the Clock Tower are both about 1.6 km away; a Grab or tuk-tuk saves the walk back to the hotel after a long evening at the market.

Why we love it

  • Comfortable family rooms with private bathrooms
  • Relaxing saltwater swimming pool and terrace
  • Balconies with pleasant pool views
  • Convenient 24-hour front desk and parking
Why guests love it

Northerly's family rooms come with air-conditioning, a private bathroom, a fridge and a kettle, so early breakfasts and late snacks are easy to manage, and the small size keeps things simple. The saltwater pool is the centrepiece, and the hotel also has a terrace, so there is outdoor space beyond the room. The 24-hour front desk helps if you arrive on a late flight into Chiang Rai. The trade-offs are clear: the hotel is outside the walkable centre, so evenings in town mean a short ride, and one review found the breakfast underwhelming. With 28 reviews averaging 9.2, the sample is still small, but the pattern of clean rooms and helpful staff is consistent.
